Health & Fitness Goals are Crucial!

MollyMeet Molly! PAC Fitness Group Exercise Instructor and Personal Trainer. Molly has been thinking a lot about goals lately. Here’s what she has to say…

Goal setting is important in all aspects of life including health and fitness. It’s crucial to have long-term goals, short-term goals and steps to achieve both! When I think of goal setting, it’s important to first identify what you want out of your workout. For instance, some individuals want to see strength improvements, others are interested in cardiovascular fitness, some want to see improvements in body composition, etc. Whatever the goal, it is important to remember to choose SMAR2T goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic AND Rewarded and Timed.

Write your goals down. Post them on the fridge, mirror or anywhere you can see them. Have friends/spouse/personal trainers help you be accountable. Have realistic goals. Don’t expect to lose 10 lbs in 2 days! And, choose a reward that doesn’t counteract your goals. For example, don’t reward yourself with a Big Mac after reaching a goal of eating clean all week! I like to reward myself with a pedicure, massage, new work out top, etc.

Keep in mind that goals can change. When I first started working out, it was to control my headaches. Over time as I strengthened my neck, shoulders and back, my headaches became non-existent! Then, I had to set new goals. Someone young may be working toward improving their speed/agility to assist them in sports, while a more mature individual may be working to improve balance, flexibility, etc.

Whatever the goal, consistency is key! Set SMAR2T goals, stick with it and once you achieve a goal, set a new one!
