The “I am not flexible enough for yoga myth…”

MerridithMeet Merridith, PAC Fitness Yoga Instructor and Personal Trainer. Merridith is a yoga guru and talks to us about the benefits of yoga.

I have been doing yoga since I was a young child. I learned directly from a yogi in a commune and it has been a huge part of my life. Sharing the benefits of yoga with the members of PAC is one of the best parts of my job!

One of the most common reasons people have for not trying a yoga class is that they believe they are not flexible enough to do yoga. The truth is that you are the most flexible you will ever be on the day you were born. From that point on, you have to use it or you lose it! You have to train specifically for flexibility just as one has to train for power lifting or marathon running.

Flexibility is one the 5 major health components of physical fitness and is simply defined as the degree to which the body can move around the range of motion of a joint. It is much more important to retain ROM than people think.

While increased flexibility is one of the major benefits of doing yoga, there are many other reasons yoga is good for your body. Regular participation can increase muscle suppleness, increase core strength, decrease soreness, increase blood circulation, increase agility, help in injury rehabilitation, improve posture and it is a great relaxation/stress management tool. Yoga also greatly improves balance. Recent studies have shown a direct correlation between memory loss (Alzheimer’s, dementia, etc.) and loss of the ability to balance as we age…which makes yoga a workout for your brain as well.

At PAC Fitness, our yoga classes vary. Some focus on flexibility and balance while others are more about strength and power. We have recently added hot yoga and Piyo to our schedule, so there is something for everyone. Try one of these great classes today and find out first-hand how you can improve all aspects of your workout by adding yoga!
